Tourism across Northeastern Ontario was up about 7% this past summer season thanks to several factors, including strength in the economy.

Both regional and municipal tourism stakeholders were part of a forum Thursday in Sudbury to talk about the successes and looking ahead to next year.

The city’s Manager of Tourism and Culture, Meredith Armstrong, says hosting Amazing Race Canada played an extremely big role in tourism for Sudbury.

She says the focus over the past year was raising the profile of Sudbury….and gaining national television exposure certainly achieved that.

Armstrong says now they need to have resources in place they they can extand the benefits long after the show is over.

Executive Director of Tourism Northern Ontario, David MacLachlan, says it was helpful to see the return of American visitors.

He attributes that to strength in the economy.
