26-year-old New Hampshire resident Matthew Gilson suffered severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his legs and hands after his electric cigarette’s battery suddenly exploded in his pocket.

It happened while he was at work and has since undergone 2 surgeries and multiple skin grafts with his recovery expected to take several months.

Gilson’s mother, Laura McCrea, claims her son purchased the e-cigarette at a smoke shop in the Lakes region. She says, an employee at the smoke shop put the vaporizer together for him. The China-based company that manufactures the e-cigs battery could not be reached for comment.
