CAW-VALE

By Stew Kernan

Positive news on the local labour front broke late this morning with word that Vale and the United Steelworkers have reached a tentative agreement on a new 5-year contract.

President of Steelworkers Local 6500 Rick Bertrand says the negotiating process has been productive and respectful and the bargaining committee has unanimously recommended acceptance.

No details on the deal will be released until the union members vote on the deal on Wednesday and Thursday.

The lead negotiator for Vale Mitch Medina says they believe they have reached an agreement that meets the needs of both the company and the employees.

The current contract expires at the end of May and if accepted the new deal comes into effect June 1st.
