We now know the date for Sudbury’s federal by-election….but it’s a moot point.

Over the weekend, Elections Canada announced October 19th for three by-elections across the country, where M-P’s seats were vacant.

They are for Sudbury, Peterborough and Ottawa-West Nepean.

Under electoral law, a by-election must be called within 180 days of the Chief Electoral Officer receiving notice of a vacant seat in the Commons.

But all three by-elections likely will be superseded if a general election is held before Oct. 19.

In December Glenn Thibeault made headlines when he left his M-P’s job and the New Democrats to run in Sudbury’s provincial by-election as a Liberal.

So far, federal candidates we know are running in Sudbury are Conservative Fred Slade, Liberal Paul Lefebvre, Green Party candidate David Robinson.

New Democrats in Sudbury haven’t yet voted for a candidate yet.
