Walk for Hope

By Nick Liard

Hundreds of people made their way to Bell Park yesterday, as the Northern Cancer Foundation held its first ever Cancer Centre Walk-Run For Hope.

All money raised will support the local cancer centre which provides research, equipment and patient care.

Executive Director Tannys Laughren says it’s a unique way to fundraise, since participants could donate to 11 different local cancer programs.

Among those are the Sam Bruno PET Scanner fund, the Terry Ames Supportive Care fund, the Trust Your Bust fund or Stomach Cancer fund.

Organizers had hoped for at least $10,000 in donations.

The online total matched that number even before the event got underway Sunday.

Laughren says they hope to expand the walk-run in coming years.

She says the new event was about raising funds and awareness about the cancer centre, which serves all of Northeastern Ontario.
