With this recent heat wave we can all attest just how hot it can get in a car in a very short time.  Humans have the ability to turn on the air conditioning or roll down the windows but pets don’t have that option.  The Ontario SPCA has launched its “No Hot Pets” campaign to re-iterate the dangers of leaving pets unattended in a vehicle.

We spoke to Jennifer Hughes, the SPCA’s Local Animal Centre manager who told us failing to look after your pets could also hit pet owners very hard.

The Society is asking for the public’s help to share this important message and report pets left unattended in vehicles.  There’s several ways you can do it.

  • Spread the word on social media by sharing the No Hot Pets message using the hashtag #nohotpets
  • Take the pledge at Nohotpets.ca vowing never to leave an animal unattended in a vehicle and that you will report it if you see it happen
  • Ask your municipality to enact a bylaw relating to dogs in cars that will help us monitor and respond to calls about pets left unattended in vehicles.
  • If you see it, report it by calling 310-SPCA (7722) or your local police immediately.

So how long does it take for a vehicle to get HOT …as you can see from this chart, not long at all.
