The L.A. Times has printed what would turn out to be the last interview with Tom Petty, who passed away Monday after suffering a massive heart attack at the age of 66.

Petty described the past year and his band’s 40th anniversary as “wonderful,” adding, “This has been the big slap on the back we never got.”

He said he was looking forward to producing an album for The Shelters, an L.A. band he’s championed for the past couple of years.

Eerily, he also commented on what would happen if he or a member of The Heartbreakers died, saying, “We’d stop. I think that would be the end of it, if someone couldn’t do it.”
