VP of Research and Scientific Director, Dr. Janet McElhaney speaks at the official opening of the new HSNRI building

The transformed Health Sciences North Research Institute building on Walford Road officially opened today.

VP of Research and Scientific Director, Dr. Janet McElhaney says this will provide much needed space for their approximately 95 employees.

She says the space at Health Sciences North was getting overcrowded and this will allow researchers to focus on trials and studies that will effect people in Northern Ontario.

Since 2012, HSNRI has been able to grow its work force from 36 to around 95 employees, and HSN CEO, Dr. Denis Roy says with this new building it’s only going to grow.

This was Roy’s final week on the job as he’s retiring and he says he’ll be keeping a close eye on the project he helped start.

HSNRI began in 2012 and since has secured more than 20 million dollars in research projects.

Construction on the 14 thousand square foot former St. Theresa School began in 2015 at the cost of 15 million dollars and researchers are expected to move in late July.
