There’s a benefit concert later this month that will help raise funds to sponsor two refugee families to Sudbury, from the war-torn Middle East.

Sudbury Project Hope has a line-up of local performers for its ‘Concert for Hope’, set for 8pm on January 29th at Glad Tidings Church.

Former Mayor Jim Gordon, who chairs the group, says they need to raise $100,000 to be able to sponsor the two refugee families.

He hopes the musical fundraiser will bring in $20,000.

They’ve already collected $40,000 towards the ultimate goal.

Gordon is thrilled the various concert performers have offered to play ‘pro bono’, simply because they want to help the refugees.

Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased online at Sudbury Project Hope (www.sudburyprojecthope.com) or branches of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

Gordon says the first family -who is fleeing from Iraq- will be here in March, while the other family should arrive a few weeks after that.

Sudbury Project Hope is a non-denominational group of about two dozen local residents who felt the need to help Middle East refugees all desperate to start a new life away from war and conflict.
