FrancoOnt

By Angela Gemmill

With one-third the population in Sudbury listed as French-speaking it’s important to celebrate their unique culture.

This is the sixth annual Franco-Ontarian day in the province.

Today is also the 40th anniversary of the first time the Franco-Ontarian flag was flown, which happened to be at the University of Sudbury.

The green and white flag was originally created in 1975 by the school’s History professor Gaetan Gervais and one of his students, Michel Dupuis.

The symbol is meant to bring pride to those who share in the unique Francophone culture and heritage throughout the province.

Everyone -of all languages and background- is invited to enjoy Franco-Ontarian day and all the local activities planned around the city.
