The international Red Cross is helping Syrian refugees leaving the war-torn country.

Donations from the Canadian public are helping the Red Cross provide food, household items and life-saving health services to those refugees who’ve exhausted their savings.

Community Services Coordinator with the Sudbury branch, David St. Georges, says there’s been an influx of donations come in, which will help tremendously.

He calls Sudbury a generous community and says residents here are always willing to step up to help others.

That money helps the Red Cross buy food, clothing and provide shelter.

St Georges says the agency uses the monetary donations to make purchases overseas in those neighbouring countries to help stimulate those respective economies.

Local donations can be dropped off at 1460 Fairburn Street or made online at redcross.ca.

Donations to this effort should be earmarked “Syrian Refugee Crisis”.

The Canadian government is matching donations dollar-for-dollar to the crisis.
