Labour Day

Labour Day celebrations go today in Bell Park with the motto “time for change.”

Canadian have celebrated on the first Monday of September since the 1880’s.

President of the Sudbury and District Labour Council, Jamie West says it’s a day to remember and a day to celebrate as a community.

West says there is still plenty of work to do.

Executive Vice-President of the Canadian Labour Congress, Donald Lafleur says the labour movement is very key with a looming federal election, and their “time for change,” motto fits right in with the NDP.

Guest speakers include Nickel Belt MP Claude Gravelle and Sudbury NDP candidate Paul Loewenberg who are both gearing up for a federal election, as well as Lafleur.

The event kicked off with a parade as unions marched in solidarity and will feature bands, food and activities for the whole family.

The event runs until 4 pm at Bell Park.
