Greater Sudbury Police had to deal with two separate cases involving bears and in both instances the animals were shot and killed.

Around 11pm Monday night a momma bear and her cub broke into a home on Muriel Crescent, in the south-end, after damaging the front door.

No one was home at the time and no one was injured.

The Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry does no respond during night hours, so Sudbury Police waited until the bears left the home before the animals were shot and killed.

It was the second police incident involving bears yesterday.

Earlier in the day, a 500-pound bear -which was injured- was found wandering around Woodbine Crescent and Kiandra Court in New Sudbury, which is a residential area.

That animal had damaged property and was acting aggressively.

While police were waiting for the M-N-R-F to arrive, the bear became aggressive, so officers shot and killed it.

In their media releases for both incidents Sudbury Police list preventable measures to keep bears away:

Only put garbage at the curbside in the morning rather than the night before garbage collection
Remove bird feeders containing seed, suet, honey
Clean outdoor barbeque grills including the grease trap underneath
If you have berry bushes in your yard, ensure that you pick them as they ripen
Remove pet food from outside
Avoid putting meat, fish, and fruit in your composter
Clean out garbage containers and recycle bins with a strong disinfectant
Consider the use of bear resistant garbage cans
