A team from the Centre for Research in Occupational Safety and Health at Laurentian University will spend the next three years looking into mental health within the mining industry.

The project is also in partnership with Steelworkers Local 6500 and Vale, to survey workers at the mining company’s Ontario Operations.

Clinical Psychologist and Project Lead, Dr Michel Lariviere says mental health issues tend to get overlooked in industrial work.

He hopes meaningful interventions will be able to be offered, and crafted uniquely for workers in the mining sector.

Lariviere says mental health can be linked to productivity, absenteeism, injury and quality of life throughout all workforces.
